HS Design was asked by Neuronetics to collaborate in a large cross-disciplined team to help develop the NeuroStar TMS Therapy System. HSD assisted in a wide variety of areas, including component selection, industrial design, human factors, packaging and mechanical development. The NeuroStar system is used for treating patients with chronic depression. In depressed patients, an imbalance develops in the neural circuits that link the prefrontal cortex with the limbic system and other parts of the brain. The NeuroStar introduces electricity flowing through a coil placed above the head generating a magnetic field, sending an electric current into the brain. The therapy system attempts to restore the natural balance.

The NeuroStar system was awarded an MDEA (Medical Design Excellence Award) in 2009 as well as a Popular Science 2009 “Best of What’s New” Award.
