Bellus SkinPen

HSD collaborated with Sparton Medical and Bellus Medical to re-design the SkinPen.  This state of-the-art microneedling device helps to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the human body.  The SkinPen precisely creates thousands of micro-injuries to the dermis which automatically triggers the body to produce naturally forming collagen synthesis.  This controlled process helps the body self- repair in treated areas without the scaring of skin tissue

Through a combination of HSD’s human factors expertise and industrial design capabilities, HSD helped to develop the ergo driven geometry which facilitates user precision. After understanding the user’s needs and context of use, HSD was able to quickly generate concepts that focused on how the user interacted with the SkinPen. Our industrial designers used their skills in rapid prototyping to create multiple foam study models allowing each form to be quickly evaluated. These models assisted in various formative studies to directly understand the clinicians’ wants and identify areas of improvement.
