Gladstone, New Jersey/United States—July 6, 2017— We are proud to announce the Vectra WB360, designed by HS Design, Inc., is a Top Winner (Gold or Silver) in the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA®) 2017 hosted by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA). A total of 25 designs won Gold and which 52 designs won Silver, the winners will be announced on Aug. 19 at the IDEA Ceremony—open to the public at Rich Theater in Atlanta and followed by a ticketed Gala at High Museum. Through Aug. 11, the public can vote online for the Vectra WB360 in the People’s Choice Award.
The Vectra WB360 won in the Medical & Health category. Senior Mechanical Engineer Robert “Bobby” Boyer at HSD worked on the Vectra WB360 closely with the client, Canfield Scientific. Boyer described the scope of the project as a multifaceted challenge – “The sheer size of the system coupled with the complex geometry of the design really pushed our team to think of new methods to bring this system to life. During the development, our team worked tirelessly to design a robust system that met the strict imaging requirements, while not compromising on the vision and aesthetics that the client desired. Anytime a change was proposed, HSD’s design and engineering team would get together with Canfield Scientific to make sure we all agreed on the outcome. In the end, HSD overcame the challenge and I believe we achieved something extraordinary”
The Vectra WB360 is the world’s first 3D whole-body imaging solution. Designed for medical use, this innovative system images nearly the entire skin surface in macro-quality resolution with a single capture. The integrated software allows clinicians to map, measure and track pigmented lesions and to record and monitor distributed skin diseases. The new Vectra WB360—equipped with 92 carefully positioned cameras—produces a 3D image of the body, precisely replicating body shape and skin features. These images are an indispensable tool for dermatologists and plastic surgeons, allowing them to more confidently assess a patient’s condition. “IDSA IDEA 2017 winners demonstrate how designers are able to capture what’s invisible to others and inspire beauty through the smallest of details within the simplest of artifacts,” said IDEA 2017 Jury Chair Owen Foster, IDSA. “Winners go beyond the tangible that we are so accustomed to seeing—to cultivate amazing, holistic ecosystems.” Foster led more than two dozen, global design experts in judging 20 categories covering products, brands, experiences, strategies and more. Onsite jurying was held in May at the newly-renamed Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, MI.
Proving design truly is a universal language, IDEA attracted hundreds of entries from 54 countries on six continents. Innovations abound in the latest winners submitted by design firms, corporations, universities and more. The competition drew entries from Australia to Austria, Belarus to Brazil, Chile to China and from countries including Croatia, Estonia, India, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Vatican City State.
